A flood warning is now in place for the Queanbeyan River as SES crews prepare to doorknock business and residents, as the waters continue to rise. The Bureau of Meteorology upgraded to a minor flood warning as the Queanbeyan River at Queens Bridge is expected to hit 6.3 metres by midnight. SES Queanbeyan unit operations officer Brent Hunter said crews were preparing to doorknock riverside businesses and residences including the city’s main shopping centre, Riverside Plaza. The Queanbeyan Riverside Caravan Park has been evacuated. About 25 people staying there are moving to the Queanbeyan Showground. Manager Danielle Stevenson said the SES told them to leave as a precaution as the river is set to hit more than 6 metres on Tuesday night. Staff had doorknocked all tourists at the site and were contacting the others. He said the areas of main concern were Trinculo Place and Collett Street and warned those streets may close in the hours ahead. Morriset Street bridge was closed early on Tuesday, along with Oaks Estate Crossing. Mr Hunter said there was no need for residents to be alarmed but they should stay alert to the rapidly changing situation. “If they need to do anything, we will tell them,” he said. Tourists and management of the Queanbeyan Riverside Caravan Park have been advised they may need to evacuate as the river continues to swell. Mr Hunter said a contingency plan was in place to likely relocate those people to the Queanbeyan Showground. Earlier, SES crews were called to Captains Flat Road to assist five teachers in evacuating the area. It is understood students had already been removed by families. Residents in areas likely to be flooded should prepare their properties now. The Bureau forecast the ACT to receive 90mm of rain through Tuesday. Forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Helen Reid said the heaviest of the falls were expected in the early afternoon, but Canberra would get consistent rainfall for most of Tuesday.
