A quick reminder

As we go into the last two matches of the group stage, it’s a good idea to remind ourselves where things stand.

As Simon said, France are through already on four points and +1 goal difference..

Germany and Portugal are both on three points, and the same +1 goal difference.

Then there’s Hungary on one point and -3 goal difference.

Below are the third-place finishers in the other groups:

  • Group A: Switzerland 4 points, -1 GD (Through)
  • Group B: Finland 3 points -2 GD
  • Group C: Ukraine 3 points -1 GD (Through)
  • Group D: Czech Republic 4 points -1 GD (Through)
  • Group E: Slovakia 3 points -5 GD (OUT)

This all means:

Germany and Portugal just need a draw to be certain of advancing.

Hungary needs a win.

A big win for Germany could mean they top the group if France and Portugal draw.

But if Hungary pulls out a win, then Germany will be out if the other game ends level.

If Portugal loses by more than three goals to France, however, they will be out.

Got that? I need a lie-down already.
