A series of very dangerous thunderstorms are sweeping across south-east Queensland, bringing golf-ball-size hail, heavy rain and damaging winds towards the coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned at 1pm that very dangerous storms were detected moving east to south-east near Gatton, Rosewood and Grandchester.

Storms were expected to hit Laidley, Redbank Plains and Hatton Vale by 1.40pm, and Hope Island, Jimboomba and South Stradbroke Island by 2.10pm.
