How depressing, as a former maths teacher, to read that students are leaving maths (“HSC pupils dump maths“, October 25). I fear this is what is contributing to the community’s increasing numerical illiteracy. The trouble is the perception of students that to maximise your results you choose the easiest courses and this leads to a downward trajectory. I always thought abandoning compulsory prerequisites was a bad idea.
