Victoria has reached a stage where it may have a lower risk of ongoing virus transmission than New South Wales, epidemiologist Catherine Bennett has said.

Speaking on ABC Radio Melbourne, the Deakin University epidemiology chair said Melbourne’s extended lockdown had helped shut down trains of transmission.

“But there is still a risk some people were still circulating the virus and not getting tested,” she said, adding that one new mystery case (an infection that cannot be traced to a known cluster) had recently been confirmed in Deer Park, in Melbourne’s west.
