Premier and Treasurer Peter Gutwein announced the state’s public sector vehicle fleet would switch to electric cars and an investigation of renewable fuel for buses. But Greens environment spokeswoman Rosalie Woodruff said the budget did little to directly tackle climate change. “They’re really only tinkering around the edges,” she said. “There’s nothing structural there’s nothing strategic in the work that they’re doing. There’s big gaps and they need to electrify the whole car fleet, they need to have a plan for electrifying all transport in Tasmania, not just looking at the government fleet.”Dr Woodruff said last week’s State of the Climate 2020 report from the Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO underlined the urgency for action.“The BOM and CSIRO report is the latest to confirm Australia is experiencing longer, more dangerous fire seasons, and more frequent extreme weather events. “Disturbingly, it projects that the extreme drought and temperature records set last year would be an average year when the world warms to 1.5 degrees.”“We aren’t doing everything we need to reduce emissions in all the other sectors like transport, like agriculture, like waste, like manufacturing. The government is putting almost no effort into reducing our emissions“It’s the sort of action that someone does off the side of their desk at the end of the day … it’s fiddling around the edges.”
