Canberrans rushed to the pools on Friday with some denied entry due to COVID-19 capacity limits. The temperature rose to 32 degrees – nine degrees higher than Canberra’s November average. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Alex Majchrowski said it was not uncommon to see days over 30 degrees in Canberra during November, with the mercury hitting 39 on November 21 last year. He said the hot weather was due to northerly winds bringing heat from northern Australia into NSW and the ACT. The average predicted temperature for December 2020 to February 2021 was 27 to 30 degrees. Pools across Canberra were forced to contend with packs of eager swimmers keen to cool off while limited by COVID-19 capacity restrictions. Dickson Aquatic Centre was forced to turn away potential swimmers after the pool reached its 500-person capacity. Pool manager Shay Kennedy said at least 1000 people in total visited the pool on Friday. He estimated about 80 would-be swimmers were turned away. Mr Kennedy reminded Canberrans to book ahead to avoid disappointment. Yet, he expected the pool to be booked out during the weekend. Dickson Aquatic Centre was running four-hour sessions and allowing 30 minutes for a COVID-safe clean between swim times. Mr Kennedy said he was glad eased COVID-19 restrictions allowed for 500 people, as dealing with the intense demand would have been difficult under previous measures limiting pools to only 200 people. Meanwhile, Manuka Pool manager Bryan Pasfield said the venue did not reach capacity at any time but about 500 people visited throughout the day. It will be hot and wet on Sunday, which is expected to reach a top of 32 degrees with a low of 14. Rain is expected to hit Canberra in the afternoon and evening with a chance of a thunderstorm. The Bureau expects up to 3mm of rain. Next week was expected to begin with cooler weather, with temperatures gradually rising through the week. The week begins with rain Monday is tipped to reach a top of 24 degrees and a minimum of 17 degrees. The Bureau expects rainfall between 4 and 15 mm. There is a chance of a thunderstorm.
