Coronavirus fragments have been detected in wastewater collected from the Altona sewage catchment.

The Department of Health and Human Services has urged residents of Altona and surrounding suburbs to get tested should they have coronavirus symptoms, no matter how mild. The request also applies to people who visited the area between Monday, November 16 and Wednesday, November 18.

Suburbs in the Altona catchment include Altona Meadows, Laverton, Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes.

DHHS says the results are unexpected given it has been eight weeks since anybody in Altona or surrounding areas has been diagnosed or treated for coronavirus.
