The officer and a colleague had been called to a property at Yarram, near Alberton, at 11.20am on Tuesday and were approaching a house when a man suddenly attacked without warning, the Herald Sun has been told.The female officer was allegedly struck to the head with a hammer as her colleague tried to help.She then opened fire with her handgun, hitting the 37-year-old man in the hand.The officer, who suffered head injuries, and her alleged attacker were taken to hospital after the incident, on the South Gippsland Highway.A man remains in hospital under police guard.No charges have been laid yet.Detectives from the armed crime squad and professional standards command are investigating the incident.Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the website www.crimestoppersvic.gov.au
