Known to counter-terror police after allegedly attempting to fly to Somalia in 2019, a charge later dropped due to lack of evidence, Mr Abdi had removed a GPS tracking device required by strict bail conditions the night prior, police say.
Officers were called to carry out a welfare check at the nearby suburb of Parkinson, where the lifeless bodies of couple Maurice, 87, and Zoe Antill, 86, were found at their Ulinga Crescent home, about 3pm on Thursday.
Items belonging to Mr Abdi were found in the home, Deputy Commissioner Tracy Linford has said, with another from the home found on Mr Abdi.
Family spokesman Ali Kadri said on Friday that linking the deaths to terrorism was premature given the “absence of any solid evidence” in the public realm of a political motive.
He added police had agreed to share police body camera footage with the family of Mr Abdi after the completion of a coroner’s report.
Further police investigations are ongoing, including an ethical standards probe into the shooting of Mr Abdi, who remains the sole link to the killing, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission, the police spokeswoman said.
