“We deserved to win the game at Liverpool and that would have made it an amazing week because nobody has done that for a long time – the team was phenomenal at Liverpool. Now if you look at the table everybody is there.”

Having picked up only one point in their last three games, Tottenham are now six points behind champions and leaders Liverpool who followed up on their win over Spurs with a 7-0 demolition of Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Mourinho argued Spurs missed the best chances against Leicester but the visitors always looked more dangerous in possession and had another goal scrapped for marginal offside as their lethal counter-attacking paid dividends.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was delighted after the Foxes bounced back from a 2-0 home defeat by Everton on Wednesday to move two places up to second, four points behind Liverpool.

“I thought we controlled the game in the first half and looked a really good side and deserved to be in front,” he told Sky Sports.

“In the second half we controlled the game without having the ball, and with a little bit more finesse we could have won by more. Over the course of the game we were outstanding and it was a very good win for us.

“We have to start winning at home. The group is learning all the time and that’s why we’re nowhere near the finished product.”

McTominay early show helps sink Leeds

At Old Trafford, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes scored twice each as Manchester United demolished old rival Leeds 6-2 to move within five points of leaders Liverpool.

McTominay scored both of his goals within the opening three minutes as Leeds failed to track his runs from midfield. Fernandes soon made it three off a loose ball in the penalty area, and Victor Lindelof knocked in a fourth when Leeds lost track of him at a corner.

Daniel James and Fernandes — from the penalty spot — scored for United in the second half. Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas’ goals for Leeds never seemed like the start of a comeback.

United moved up to third, with a game in hand on second-place Leicester and Liverpool.

The win ended United fans’ long wait for a league game against Leeds — the last was in 2004 — and for an emphatic win at Old Trafford.

Before kick-off, only Brighton, Burnley and Sheffield United had earned fewer league points at home, and United’s only home win was an underwhelming 1-0 against West Bromwich Albion last month.

Sheffield United sink Brighton

In Brighton, visitors were reduced to 10 men when John Lundstram was sent off for upending Joel Veltman in a reckless challenge in the first half, with the referee changing his decision from a yellow card to a red following a VAR review.

Despite Brighton’s domination, United took the lead when Bogle made an impact after coming on as a second-half substitute.

The 20-year-old fired David McGoldrick’s cut-back towards goal and a deflection off Adam Webster took the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the 63rd minute.

Brighton substitute Welbeck equalised three minutes from time from a set-piece when the ball fell to him in the six-yard box and the unmarked striker controlled it with his chest before firing a volley into the back of the net.

The home side had numerous chances to score but were denied by the Blades’ dogged defending while McGoldrick nearly struck at the other end with a free kick, only to be denied by a smart save from Sanchez.

Brighton almost came up with the winner in stoppage time when Welbeck’s header was cleared off the line before Alireza Jahanbakhsh headed the ball against the crossbar.
