Shops and homes in Warrnambool were inundated by water after a severe stormed lashed the south-western Victorian town on Saturday afternoon.

The State Emergency Service said it received more than 90 calls for assistance after the sudden downpour hit the region shortly after 2pm.

More than 50 millimetres of rain fell in the town over a 30-minute period.

The Bureau of Meteorology said severe thunderstorms were expected to continue into the evening in western Victoria.

More rainfall and thunderstorms were forecast for eastern Victoria on Sunday.
