news, latest-news,

It has been a soggy, steamy start to the new year in Canberra. It is a far cry from the hot, smoky and dry conditions we were sweltering through this time one year ago. It was one year ago today heat records were broken as Canberra’s temperature soared to 44 degrees. It was only after 7pm on January 4, 2020 that temperatures fell below 40. At the same time, NSW was being ravaged by bushfires and there was growing concern about smoke blanketing the ACT. Prior to last year’s record-breaking day, the previous top temperature was 42.8 degrees on January 11, 1939. Meteorologist at the bureau Helen Reid said this summer was expected to be “quite a different season this year than last year, thankfully.” Unlike last year, today is expected to reach a much cooler temperature of 25 degrees. The extreme dry weather of January 2020 seems a distant memory now with showers expected to continue and the chance of a thunderstorm on Wednesday. North of the ACT there is a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones. The warning covers the Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains and areas of the Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, South Coast and South West Slopes. Dr Reid didn’t rule out the storm affecting the ACT. “The ACT is not in the firing line but it might not miss it,” she said. Dr Reid said the storm was moving roughly east and south. Canberrans can expect wet conditions to continue until Thursday. It’s expected to be mild but wet on Tuesday with a top of 24 degrees and Wednesday with a top of 22 degrees. Conditions are expected to change on Thursday which is forecasted to be partly cloudy with a maximum temperature of 22 degrees. Similar temperatures are expected on Friday, which is forecasted to be cloudy with a top of 24 degrees. Temperatures are expected to heat up into into the weekend. It is forecasted to be cloudy with 28 degrees on Saturday with light winds. Dr Reid said Sunday is “the pick of the sequence”, expected to be a clear and sunny day with a maximum temperature of 31 degrees.
