The 11-year-old, who local police said was with a group of rock climbers at the time of her death, sustained critical injuries after she fell 10m from a popular climbing site in Buckland, about 40km northeast of Hobart, on Friday.Tragically, despite attempts to revive the girl, she could not be saved and died at the scene.Tributes have flowed for the youngster online, where loved ones remembered her as the “sparkle in our lives”.“You brought us much love and awesome conversations and great generosity,” one post reads.“Not on this World anymore yet never forgotten. You celebratated (sic) life and so shall we.”Another said: “The most precious little girl!! We will miss her more than we can say!“Fly free little one! God bless you.”One friend described the girl as “a great friend”.“We will miss you and we will meet again,” the friend said.
It is not yet clear if the girl was climbing when the tragedy occurred or if she was “just walking and lost her footing”, Tasmania Police Clarence Division Acting Inspector Michael Foster said.He said she was believed to have been holidaying with siblings, with police having to notify the girl’s family in Victoria.Insp Foster described the incident as “horrific”.A report will be prepared for the coroner.Mountain Bike and Rock Climbing Tasmania owner and tour guide Ian Ferrier said the tragic death had saddened the state’s rock climbing community.“It’s terrible. It’s in an area where people go to have fun and then something horrible like that happens. It’s very unfortunate,” he said.“It’s unfortunately a pretty blunt illustration of how dangerous it can be … even if it’s a brief moment of inattention really … as we often say, gravity doesn’t take a holiday.“It’s very sad.”Mr Ferrier said his business did not run tours in the area but that the spot was popular with rock climbers.He said the location was advertised in some guides online, giving those on the mainland the chance to explore.
