Sydney sprinter Rohan Browning has become the second-fastest Australian 100 metre sprinter of all time after cracking the magical 10 second barrier in a race on Saturday.

Browning, 23, clocked a time of 9.96 seconds in winning the 100m at the Illawarra Track Challenge in Wollongong, and though a illegal tailwind of 3.3 metres per second meant the Sydney sprinter’s time didn’t count toward qualifying towards for the Tokyo Olympics, the sizzling sub-10 second time still put Browning in rare company.

Sydney 2000 Olympian Patrick Johnson is the only Australian to have ever run faster, having recorded times of 9.88 seconds, 9.90 seconds and 9.93 seconds during his career.

The only time that was legal – and remains the only legal sub-10 by an Australian runner – was Johnson’s national record of 9.33 seconds in Mito, Japan in 2003, given the faster pair of times were both assisted by strong winds.
