Spector was pronounced dead on Saturday and his “official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner,” according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, according to AFP.
Elsewhere, it has been reported that Spector died due to complications after contracting coronavirus while in prison.Born Harvey Phillip Spector in the Bronx, New York on December 26, 1939, Spector rose to fame as an innovative American record producer, musician, and songwriter who developed the Wall of Sound, a music production formula that elevated pop and rock music to an experiential art form that was more akin to opera than a commercial product.Spector quickly became known for his creative control over every phase of the recording but his approach paid off.At the at the age of 21 he became the youngest ever US label owner and throughout the 1960s he wrote, co-wrote, or produced records for the Ronettes, the Crystals, and Ike & Tina Turner.
He appeared to retire in 1966 only to return to the music industry in 1969 and went on to produce the Beatles’ album Let It Be (1970), as well as solo records by John Lennon and George Harrison. By the mid-1970s, Spector had produced 18 US Top 10 singles for various artists including The Righteous Brothers, Leonard Cohen, the Ramones, and others but he appeared to succumb to personal problems and again withdrew from the industry.“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” received the most US airplay of any song in the 20th century.
After 30 years in retirement, Spector was convicted for the 2003 murder of actor Lana Clarkson.At the time of his death, Spector was serving a sentence of 19 years to life in prison in Kern County, California for the second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson six years ago.
Spector, then 67, was accused of fatally shooting 40-year-old Lana Clarkson in February 2003 who was found shot dead in Spector’s Alhambra, California home.
