Police believe a scaffolder who went on a burglary spree in Canberra’s inner-south stole a motor vehicle and a mountain bike while he was on bail. Prosecutor Sam Bargwanna in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday said Dale Mitchell Goesch, 29, allegedly committed the thefts just days after being released from prison. He said Goesch had also handed police a fraudulent medical certificate while he was on bail, and hadn’t shown up to meetings for an intensive correction order assessment. Magistrate Glenn Theakston will consider whether he should sentence Goesch to an intensive correction order, which is a jail sentence served in the community, for a string of offences he committed on August 26. The court heard last year that Goesch tried to reverse one victim’s Mercedes-Benz out of his garage and, when the car owner said, “What are you doing?”, Goesch punched him in the head. The 29-year-old ran off and the victim and his neighbour gave chase, but stopped when a gun fell out of the back of Goesch’s pants and an onlooker warned, “He’s got a gun”. Goesch was later spotted loitering on a woman’s property, and looked as if he was going to open another woman’s front door before he realised she was watching him. Police ultimately apprehended Goesch in a loading dock behind a McDonald’s restaurant, where he tried to hide a handgun behind bins. The prosecutor on Wednesday said Goesch should have his bail revoked since he’d been accused of committing even more crimes since his release from custody. A bail consideration form said Goesch would also face a fresh charge for an attempted vehicle theft in May 2020. For the inner-south burglary spree, Goesch has pleaded guilty to eight charges including attempted robbery, possessing a prohibited firearm and going equipped for theft. Mr Bargwanna emphasised Goesch wasn’t complying with bail conditions, given he hadn’t shown up to his appointments to be assessed for an intensive correction order. Goesch’s lawyer Bowan Shelton said the 29-year-old had missed the appointments because his ex-partner was ill and he’d had to take care of their children full-time. Mr Bargwanna said that, regardless, Goesch “simply buried his head in the sand” instead of telling police his circumstances had changed. The magistrate said he would allow Goesch to continue his bail. Mr Theakston warned the 29-year-old that he should do as much as he could to impress corrections officers before his sentence on February 10.
