A search for a man who was swept off a break wall at Coffs Harbour in the state’s north on Thursday night has been suspended.
A woman who had been walking in front of the man told police that he was no longer behind her after a large wave broke over the break wall at Jordan Esplanade about 6.30pm.
The alarm was raised, and police have begun searching the area, with the assistance of the Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue, NSW Ambulance, Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter and Coffs Harbour Lifeguards.
The search is now expected to resume at first light.
Police are asking for anyone with information or who may have seen the man to come forward.
He is described as being in his 20s, of muscular build, average height and with dark hair.
He may have been wearing a red shirt, with grey or beige shorts and red shoes, according to witnesses.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact Coffs Harbour police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
