In an insanely audacious move that will very likely fail, Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene announced she has filed articles of impeachment against the new President.
“I just filed articles of impeachment on President Joe Biden, we’ll see how this goes,” she said on a Twitter video.
She is accusing the president of corruption and abuse of power, alleging that he “allowed” his son, Hunter Biden, “to siphon cash from America’s greatest enemies Russian and China.”
Mr Biden got into a testy exchange with a reporter at the White House today as he signed a new series of executive orders to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
The reporter asked whether Mr Biden’s target of reaching 100 million COVID-19 vaccinations in his first 100 days was “high enough”.
“When I announced it, you all said it’s not possible. Come on, give me a break man,” the President shot back. “It’s a good start, 100 million.”
His assertion that the news media “all said it’s not possible” is incorrect. There has been plenty of reporting calling the target “challenging”, and some suggesting it is not ambitious enough.
Another point of reference: the US averaged about 900,000 doses of the vaccine per day last week, which is almost enough to meet the target of a million each day already.
The executive orders Mr Biden signed today included further mask mandates, new requirements for travellers arriving overseas, and measures intended to increase the supply of important medical equipment.
“Let me be very clear. Things are going to continue to get worse before they get better. The memorial we held two nights ago will not be our last one, unfortunately. The death toll will likely top 500,000 next month. The cases will continue to mount,” Mr Biden told Americans.
“We didn’t get into this mess overnight, and it’s going to take months for us to turn things around. But let me be equally clear. We will get through this. We will defeat this pandemic.
“To a nation waiting for action, let me be the clearest on this point. Help is on the way.”
