A community warning for Braeside, Cheltenham, Dingley Village, Heatherton, Mentone, Moorabbin Airport, Mordialloc and Parkdale is in place due to the smoke in the area and the proximity of the fire to Moorabin Airport.
“Smoke is blowing across nearby roads. You may see or smell smoke. Smoke will be visible from nearby roads and communities. Emergency services will remain in the area,” the warning reads.
“There is no immediate threat to the community, please stay away from the area to allow emergency services clear access.”
The factory is about 40 by 60 metres in size.
Callers to radio station 3AW say there is thick black smoke in the bayside area.
Lower Dandenong Road is closed in both directions, and emergency services are turning traffic around. VicRoads is advising motorists to avoid the area and use Centre Dandenong Road as an alternative.
