Melbourne have been dealt a blow on the eve of the season with on-baller Jack Viney having surgery on his foot to relieve soreness in his plantar fascia.

The operation on his left foot was a day procedure with Viney able to leave hospital on Friday.

Melbourne football manager Alan Richardson told the club website the former co-captain, who will be vice-captain to Max Gawn again in 2021, had reported pain and the club decided to have the procedure now ahead of round one in mid-March.

“The plan is for Jack to commence off-legs conditioning on Monday, with the aim to be back running in approximately two weeks,” Richardson said.
