Officers with sniffer dogs were deployed and helicopters conducted aerial searches of the sprawling estate in a bid to piece together exactly what happened when the car screeched into the dead end street just before 6pm on Saturday.Police and paramedics were called to the burning car on Hume Rd, Smithfield about 6pm.

“Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the blaze and police discovered the body of a man inside,” a police statement said. Police said the man has not been formally identified but the Homicide Squad has set up Strike Force Bettington to investigate his death, which is being treated as suspicious. “A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” the statement said. “Anyone with information or who may have dashcam footage that may assist investigators is urged to contact Cumberland Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
