Police have called off the search for three men missing from a fishing trip in Queensland’s far north more than a week after the group was last seen.

The trio, aged 18, 27 and 37, had set out from Yarrabah, east of Cairns, on January 26 for a 140-kilometre trip north to Cape Tribulation.

After an extensive air, sea and land search, police called off the efforts on Wednesday on the advice of experts.

The fishermen were last seen about 8.30am the morning of their departure near a reef off Green Island, with apparent engine trouble on the 4.8-metre vessel, registered VO317Q.

Police were alerted before dawn the next day after the group failed to return.

A fuel tank belonging to the boat, along with a waterlogged life jacket, was found, with weather hampering the search last week.
