The new test will replace the existing hazard-perception test between P1 and P2 licences after research showed the tests were more beneficial between the supervised and unsupervised driving stages.
Mr Bailey said the online exam featured high-quality 3D computer-generated clips presenting the most challenging hazards for new drivers, based on road crash data.
The lion’s share of the 200 test clips involve intersections and give-way signs.
“All learner drivers, regardless of their age, will be required to complete the online assessment before they take the practical test,” Mr Bailey said.
“This is about making sure that from the very first day that a driver hops in the car unsupervised, they’re putting safety first, they know the hazards to look out for, and they avoid the fatal five.”
Drivers must have held their learner’s licence for at least six months before they take the hazard-perception test.
Learners can then access the test for up to 12 months and immediately try it again if they fail.
