For a fourth day in a row, protesters took to the streets of Yangon, Myanmar, on February 9, to voice their opposition to a military takeover instigated of the country. Local media reported that tens of thousands took part in the Tuesday demonstration, despite a ban on gatherings. Local reports said protesters were calling for the release of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other elected officials who were detained following the military’s allegations of voting irregularities in a November election won by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. The Myanmar Times said street protests first erupted on Saturday, February 6, with a small protest in front of Yangon City Hall.
