This pair has a weird relationship
Despite never having really met on the court, there have been some shots fired across the bow around the traps, thanks largely to photos like the one below…
Thiem (right) played at Novak Djokovic’s Adria Tour and was actually very prolific on tour last year, while Kyrgios stayed completely away from the sport once COVID hit.
Kyrgios had some things to say about the risks of playing during the pandemic, and Djokovic, Thiem and others had some words back at him.
Thiem: “It was [Djokovic’s] mistake, but I don’t understand why a lot of people want to interfere. Kyrgios did a lot of mistakes himself. It would be better for him to come clean instead of criticising others.”
Kyrgios: “What are you talking about? Mistakes like smashing rackets? Swearing? Tanking a few matches here or there? Which everyone does? None of you have the intellectual level to even understand where I’m coming from. I’m trying to hold them accountable. This just shows what a joke [Thiem, Zverev and Djokovic] think this is, two of them partying like potatoes during a global pandemic. People losing lives, loved ones and friends, and then Thiem standing up for the ‘mistake’. These guys are the ‘top’ of our sport. SMH.”
He also quite drunkenly ragged on the Austrian on Instagram with Andy Murray, basically saying he just wasn’t the type of person he’d want to get on the beers with.
But, he also apparently did exactly that in Mexico a few years back.
So who knows what to believe?
