A seven-storey office building could be part of Art Group’s redevelopment of a former Dickson public housing site. Art Group plans to create a five-precinct development on the Northbourne Avenue site at Morphett Street including residential, commercial and mixed-use buildings. Development applications have previously been lodged to construct up to 750 apartments on two sections of the site. The latest application includes plans to upgrade the Hope Street playground and build a two-metre wide footpath along the length of the site on Northbourne Avenue. Both were required under the deed with the ACT government. Art Group bought the 2.6-hectare Dickson site in 2016 for $37 million. It previously housed the Dickson Towers and Karuah public housing blocks, as well as a tourist information centre. According to the documents, stage three of the development dubbed “Soho” has been “significantly modified” to include a seven-storey, 12,000 square-metres office building in the centre of the site. It would also include six terrace dwellings and basement parking. The building will be the one commercial component of the design, surrounded by residential builds. An application for this proposal will be lodged at a later stage. READ MORE: The building would include basement parking and the “adaptive reuse of the existing heritage buildings including commercial uses and six terrace dwellings”. The developer has already been granted approval to demolish parts of the public housing and an application will be lodged later to demolish the information centre. A heritage-listed Dickson Towers building will be incorporated into plans for an apartment building which have already been approved.
