What better way to toast Canberra Day than with a Skywhale Ale? Skywhale and Skywhalepappa creator Patricia Piccinini has teamed up with Bentspoke Brewing Co to craft a Skywhale beer just in time for Canberra Day on Monday. In a special event on Monday afternoon, Piccinini will be talking beers and balloons on stage at the BentSpoke Beer Garden at Enlighten with BentSpoke’s head brewers and founders, Tracy Margrain and Richard Watkins. It’s a free event but you must register for the tickets. The Skywhale Ale collaboration came out of their shared love of Canberra and skywhales. The creative trio workshopped an appropriately unique taste. Cloudberries were introduced to the the cloudy ale to give the beer “an extra dose of fruity Canberra sky”. (The orange berries also have the advantage of kind of looking like sheddings from a Skywhale.) “Tracy and I had some wonderful conversations, talking about art and brewing. We talked about qualities that both the Skywhales and the beer might share: cloudiness like the sky, lightness like the air, a degree of strangeness,” Piccinini said. “We hit upon the idea of cloudberries because they sounded like something Skywhales might eat. I was blown away when I finally tasted it, lots of character and really grows on you, intense and complex but enjoyable, unusual but approachable”. Patricia says she always planned to do a Skywhale beer. “I always knew that we needed to have a Skywhale Ale, and it was immediately obvious to me that I needed to work with BentSpoke,” the artist said. “The beers they brew are fantastic, but they have an amazing commitment to sustainability and innovation that aligns perfectly with the ideas behind the Skywhales project.” The beer is exclusively on tap at the BentSpoke BrewPub in Braddon, and on tap at the Enlighten beer garden. BentSpoke’s founder Richard Watkins says the beer has “strong gooseberry-like aromas, and is packed full of experimental hop HBC 630 which offers a sweeter, lychees-type aroma. Tartness from the xloudberry finishes the palate off nicely”. So now you now. The event with Patricia Piccinini and BentSpoke will be held at the BentSpoke Beer Garden at the Enlighten Festival from 2.30pm to 4.45pm on Monday, with music to start. Piccinni is due on stage with the BentSpoke brewers at 3pm. Register for free tickets for the special event here.
