A severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall in Sydney has “temporarily eased”, with reports of fallen trees and winds already reaching 78 km/h in Penrith.
Severe thunderstorms were detected near Horsley Park and Penrith at 4.30pm on Monday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The storms, moving east, were forecast to hit Parramatta, Liverpool and Riverstone by 5pm and Sydney City, Sydney Airport, Sydney Olympic Park and the Sydney Harbour Bridge by 5.30pm.
In an update at 5.12pm, the bureau said: “Severe thunderstorms in the warning area have temporarily eased. However, the redevelopment of severe thunderstorms remains likely. The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued as necessary.”

Western Sydney Health captured the cell as it moved across Westmead Hospital.
Trains have been suspended on the Blue Mountains Line “due to a tree caught in overheard wiring between Blaxland and Glenbrook”. NSW TrainLink West at 5.16pm said replacement buses were arriving at Penrith.
