The MCG is set to host its first AFL crowds since the 2019 Grand Final with 50,000 supporters expected to flood the stadium for the season opener while CEO Gillon McLachlan continues discussions to raise the crowd capacity limit.
The Victorian government has placed a crowd capacity limit at sporting events of 50 per cent, which will only allow 50,000 supporters to watch the traditional season opener between Carlton and Richmond.
Mr McLachlan said he was “optimistic” crowd capacities would increase following the end of round one has he holds meetings with the Victorian government on the issue.
The AFL’s hope is crowd capacity will return to 100 per cent by the Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon.
