The military has been enlisted to help with the coronavirus vaccine rollout in aged care facilities, as the first AstraZeneca vaccines start being distributed across the country.

Army doctors and nurses are undergoing training this week before they join the work to immunise aged care residents and workers in regional and remote areas from next week.

The Australian Defence Force will support the private logistics and healthcare companies already providing vaccines at aged care facilities around the country, with the addition of ADF personnel in logistics teams as well as more security and clerical staff.

Health Minister Greg Hunt announced a further 135,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine had arrived in Australia on Tuesday, bringing the total number of doses of the vaccine to 443,000.
