For the last half-decade in AFL Cairns, the footballer who has won the best and fairest prize in the competition has failed to either win their own club best and fairest or had to share it with a teammate after tying on votes. In 2020, Saints on-baller Josh Matulis won the coveted Crathern Medal and not long after was forced to settle for third at his own club, as the hard-running Dylan McConachy took out Saints’ highest prize. South Cairns ruckman Jake Roach shared the Cutters’ highest prize at their end-of-season count last year, while the season before, Saints on-baller Joel Newman claimed the Crathern Medal but teammate Cade Wellington beat the Townsville product intheir club count. Damien Roe, the 2016 Crathern Medallist, had to share Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs’ best and fairest award in that season with Jayden Holt and it was Tim McAuley who caused the upset of Hugh Nicholson in 2017.

Saints playing-coach Wes Glass believes McConachy was a worthy winner and there was not much between their top four at Griffiths Park. “I think it was like 10 votes between the top three, with Rhys Bridge second, and Jesse Travaglini about two or three offt hem, so it was pretty close,” Glass said. Impressive teenager Josh Mawson can add best and fairest in a premiership year to his growing resume after he claimed the Crocs’ top award for 2020. “Josh just got home by a vote from Jackson McDonald. It was really close — there was six guys within three or four votes,” Crocs coach Brad Cooper said. “Josh had a middle section of the season where he was excellent and racked up the votes, between Round 3 and 8.

After sharing the 2019 best and fairest with Roach, the versatile Jermaine Wardle won South Cairns’ best and fairest outrightthis year.
