An alleged serial Facebook fraudster has been brought before the courts again, this time accused of using a stolen chequebook to buy more than $126,000 worth of stuff. Police found the chequebook at 24-year-old Dean Ivan Welsh’s Narrabundah house last Tuesday. A woman later called and said her accounts had been frozen after she sold Mr Welsh her 2010 Audi A5 for $23,000. In police documents tendered to the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday, officers alleged Mr Welsh used the chequebook to buy the car. They said the chequebook’s owner reported $126,500 missing from his account. The documents said Mr Welsh told officers he’d bought the chequebook from a friend who he couldn’t name. On Thursday, he did not enter a plea to one new count of obtaining property by deception. Mr Welsh is already facing three more counts of obtaining property by deception, as well as two counts of theft and one count of taking a car without consent over a swathe of alleged offending late last year. At a court appearance earlier this month, he denied allegations he ripped off Facebook Marketplace users, stole a man’s $12,000 BMW after he claimed he’d paid him the money, stole car keys and helped steal a car after he managed to get into Club Lime at Conder. Police alleged that, on one occasion, Mr Welsh told one Facebook user he’d sent her $1100 for her iPhone. When the money didn’t turn up in her account and she questioned him about it, the 24-year-old allegedly said: “It goes against my morals to rip someone off, you can trust me.” READ MORE: Man ripped off Facebook users despite claiming it was against his morals, police say Mr Welsh on Thursday pleaded with Magistrate Glenn Theakston to give him another chance at bail after the alleged fresh offending – he told him, “Please, sir”, and wiped at his eyes. But Mr Theakston refused. He said the issue of the stolen chequebook increased the complexity of the case, and noted Mr Welsh had allegedly been spotted breaching his bail by driving a Range Rover unlicensed on January 25. The magistrate remanded Mr Welsh in custody to appear in court again on February 2, and said he would be sentenced for additional drug-driving offences in the Galambany Court on April 21.
