The bushfire, which started near the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Doconing Road just after 4pm is stayionary, is contained but not controlled. Great Eastern Highway is open with speed restrictions.

It has burned through 22 hectares of bushland.

Firefighters managed to control a bushfire emergency in Geraldton’s north overnight after lives and homes were under immediate risk on Tuesday evening.

The Department for Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze, which started near the intersection of Eighth Street and Flores Road was reported just after 4pm and was now stationary, controlled and contained.

There is still a possible risk to lives and homes for people for parts of Wonthella as the fire was approaching and conditions were changing.

Near Lancelin, more than 200 firefighters are working tirelessly to bring a fire under control which has torn through more than 7200 hectares and forced nearly 300 residents to evacuate their homes.

Firefighters will be met with yet another day of challenging conditions to fight the fires across the state, with another hot day of 37 degrees and more strong easterly winds expected.
