Merv Hughes thinks that this is an opportunity for Cameron Green to shine in just his second Test match, but this, his third innings at the top of the game, has been the latest in something of a baptism of fire for the tall man from Western Australia.

Green has come to the middle with Australia on 4-124 in the first Test, and in Melbourne with the score on 4-98 and 4-65.

Those aren’t the sort of situations you want your 21-year-old number six to have to face too often at the start of his career.

He made 11 in Adelaide, 12 in the first innings here and was unbeaten on 17 overnight.

He will need a big score here if Australia is to have any chance whatsoever, you’d think.
