A Canberra man has been rescued off the coast of north-east Tasmania after his nine-metre yacht’s engine failed. The 57-year-old man, who is an experienced sailor, set off his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, and a police vessel attended and brought the yacht under tow on Sunday morning. The yacht’s engine failed about 11 nautical miles off Binalong Bay and has since been towed back to St Helens. During the rescue, the tender for the yacht broke free and remains adrift in the Binalong Bay area. In a statement, Tasmania Police said it was a difficult rescue. “The rescue was made difficult due to the dangerous weather conditions,” the statement reads. The man was transferred to St Helens District Hospital for assessment. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Challenger aircraft from Victoria were flown to the area to provide assistance.
