The ACT government has announced it will spend $27.4 million towards expanding and building public schools in the Gungahlin region in its upcoming 2020-2021 budget. The government said it would spend $1 million to expand the Margret Hendry Primary School in Taylor. Works on the expansion are due to run between 2021-2023 and aim to cater for an additional 600 students. An investment of $2 million will go towards design work for a new high school in Taylor, which is expected to open in 2024 with 800 students. In other news: The final $24.4 million will be invested in road infrastructure in new suburb Kenny for the establishment of a high school. The new high school will feature a multipurpose gymnasium available for community use. Chief Minister Andrew Barr said Gungahlin was one of the fastest growing regions in the country and more families in Canberra were choosing public education. ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry said the new and expanded public schools would operate with zero net carbon emissions, adding that ACT public school enrolments were increasing by 3 per cent each year. “The government will continue planning for student growth across Canberra,” she said.
