The names of schools that contain lead paint or asbestos or both have been published after the Education Minister bowed to opposition calls. The Education Directorate has listed 75 schools with lead paint and 71 schools with asbestos. There are a total of 69 schools that contain lead and asbestos. The website states the directorate regularly inspects public school buildings to ensure they remain safe for students, staff and the wider community. “We regularly check the condition of these hazards so we can take prompt action if they have deteriorated, been damaged or disturbed,” the website said. “This list will be updated as new information comes to hand. READ MORE: “Each school on this list has a record of where hazardous materials are located and how they are being managed. This record is called a Hazardous Materials Register, it is kept at the front office of each school and it is available to the public.” The list was published after pressure from the opposition and media reports of four schools that have had to undergo lead paint remediation since July.
