Emergency services have responded to almost 40 calls for help across the ACT, with Belconnen and Woden the worst affected in the wake of the storm that hit on Monday afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra and large parts of NSW from Dubbo to Eden. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall was likely in the region over the next several hours. Nearly 21mm of rain fell at Canberra Airport in about half an hour, while 25mm was recorded at Tuggeranong as of 7pm. An ESA spokeswoman said emergency services were assisting with leaking roofs and fallen trees. The majority of the storm damage hit Belconnen and Woden. The ESA spokeswoman said Canberrans should drive cautiously in the treacherous conditions. Bureau senior forecaster Jordan Notara said the storm system tracked from western NSW across the ACT and southern NSW. Mr Notara said heavy rainfall causing flash flooding and water over roadways was possible, with the potential for up to 70mm in an hour. He said there would likely be pockets of heavy rainfall across the city. Storms were predicted to continue into Tuesday morning. The bureau forecast up to 10mm could fall with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a storm. The ACT Emergency Services Agency said residents should act early to prevent damage by cleaning gutters, moving cars under cover and away from trees and securing loose items around the home and yard. The ESA also reminded Canberrans never to drive through floodwater.
