Heavy rainfall and a severe thunderstorm is forecast to hit Canberra on Monday afternoon. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra and parts of NSW. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall is likely in the region over the next several hours. Bureau senior forecaster Jordan Notara said storms currently west of the ACT would likely track east through Monday afternoon into the evening. Mr Notara said heavy rainfall causing flash flooding and water over roadways was possible, with the potential for up to 70mm in an hour. He said there would likely be pockets of heavy rainfall across the city. Mr Notara said hail was not currently expected but “couldn’t rule it out”. Locations which may be affected include Canberra, Yass, Parkes, Wagga Wagga, Narrandera and Cobar. Storms are predicted to continue into Tuesday morning. The bureau forecast up to 10mm could fall with a 60 per cent of showers and a storm. The ACT Emergency Services Agency say residents should act early to prevent damage by cleaning gutters, moving cars under cover and away from trees and securing loose items around the home and yard. The ESA also remind Canberrans never to drive through floodwater.
