coronavirus,
Canberrans have been urged not to travel to Sydney and anyone recently returned from the northern beaches must quarantine as the cluster grows. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said now was “not a good time” to travel to Sydney as NSW announced the cluster had grown by another 10 cases. Ms Stephen-Smith has also asked Sydneysiders to avoid travelling to Canberra this weekend if possible. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned everyone in Greater Sydney to be on high alert. She emphasised the importance of containing the outbreak over the next three days, but did not rule out further restrictions if more people tested positive. The spike in cases overnight prompted ACT Health to require any Canberrans who had been in the northern beaches since December 11 to self-isolate for 14 days from the date they were there, and get tested for COVID-19. ACT chief health officer Kerryn Coleman said people must stay in quarantine for the whole 14 days regardless of a negative test result. Dr Coleman said the rapid increase in cases linked to the so-called Avalon cluster in the past 48 hours indicated there had been a “fair degree of community transmission already”. There were 28 cases connected to the cluster as of midday on Friday. Canberrans have flocked to testing centres putting pressure on clinics across the city, which has led Dr Coleman to allow private GP respiratory assessment centres, which typically only test people with COVID-19 symptoms, to take asymptomatic patients. Dr Coleman said appointments were required at these clinics. Ms Stephen-Smith said Canberrans should “think twice” if they had plans to travel to Sydney this weekend and urged people to remain in the ACT as authorities worked to get the situation under control. “I know that’s going to be difficult for a lot of people,” she said “If you don’t need to go to Sydney this weekend, don’t go – stay in Canberra. “We are seeing that new locations are being identified as part of this cluster. We already know some people in this cluster are not necessarily located in the northern beaches. “My advice would be really think twice if you are intending to travel to Sydney this weekend. That’s not necessarily going to be our advice for the longer term or leading up to Christmas.” Ms Stephen-Smith expressed confidence in NSW’s ability to manage the latest outbreak, saying authorities had done an “absolutely outstanding job” dealing with each cluster through the pandemic. A number of states imposed travel restrictions on the ACT earlier in the year because it sits as an island within NSW. However no jurisdiction has shut its border to the ACT since Sydney’s northern beaches outbreak emerged. Ms Stephen-Smith said the ACT couldn’t control what other states did with their borders, but stressed to her colleagues interstate that the ACT had no active cases and had not recorded a case of community transmission during the pandemic. She said ACT authorities would immediately update roadside signs near Canberra with the new travel advice. Closing or restricting travel through the ACT border remains an option, but is the absolute last resort if the situation in Sydney drastically worsens. Health Minister Greg Hunt said, “It has met the Commonwealth definition, given that more cases are expected over the course of the coming afternoon and we’re getting ahead of rather than responding to the likely threshold. “This support that will now flow includes provisions of PPE from the national medical stockpile, support for aged care facilities and assistance with contact tracing for New South Wales if that’s required.” The spike has led several states to reimpose border restrictions, shutting out northern beaches residents. Western Australia has imposed mandatory quarantine for any entering NSW residents. In Tasmania and Queensland, Sydney’s northern beaches has been declared a hotspot. Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged people to pay attention to the health advice, and the new cases were a reminder the pandemic was still happening. “NSW has dealt with many of these challenges over the course of recent months and over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, NSW had demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to deal with these challenges and I retain full confidence in their ability to do that,” he said.
