A man is in hospital with a fractured skull after he was knocked out and sent flying 20 metres through the air by his own vehicle in a carjacking north of Canberra, police say. NSW Police said on Thursday that the 33-year-old man and a friend had gone to a service station on the Hume Highway at Marulan, near Goulburn, about 11pm the previous night. They were there to meet a 22-year-old Sydney man about the potential sale of the older man’s BMW M3. “During the inspection, the 22-year-old man sat in the driver’s seat before reversing the car at speed with the driver’s door open, striking the vehicle owner and flinging him about 20 metres away, knocking him unconscious,” police said. “The younger man was seen to drive the BMW north on the Hume Highway and emergency services were contacted.” As police tried to track down the alleged car thief, paramedics took the 33-year-old owner to Goulburn Base Hospital in a serious condition. About 12.15am on Thursday, police say they spotted the BMW heading north on the Hume Highway near Campbelltown in southwest Sydney. Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command began chasing the vehicle, but had to terminate the pursuit because of safety concerns. A short time later, PolAir personnel found the BMW parked near a truck at a rest stop on the same highway at Casula. They informed officers on the ground, who arrested the 22-year-old man and took him to Campbelltown Police Station. He was refused police bail to face Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday, on charges of aggravated assault with intent to take a motor vehicle, inflicting actual bodily harm and failing to stop for police. Police said they had seized the BMW for forensic examination, with investigations ongoing.
