news, latest-news, christmas day weather canberra

There’s a reasonable chance of showers in Canberra on Christmas Day. The Bureau of Meteorology puts it at 30 per cent. But even if the rain doesn’t actually fall, the city is likely to be humid and cloudy, with a top temperature of 28 degrees. If you’re thinking of heading south to the coast to escape any showers, the bureau reckons there’s a greater chance of rain there. “It’s still a little bit iffy if the showers will remain to the east of Canberra but with a bit of luck, it will just be cloudy without showers,” forecaster Gabrielle Woodhouse said. But if your idea of a good Christmas involves serious sunshine, think of last year’s Christmas when smoke smothered the city. “While there were no major bushfires in the ACT in December (last year), heavy smoke haze from fires in surrounding areas of New South Wales affected Canberra for large parts of the month. Air quality reached hazardous levels on numerous occasions,” the bureau said. Christmas Day itself came between two heatwaves from December 18 to 21 and then from Boxing Day to the end of the year. The six consecutive days of 35 degrees or higher were a December record, surpassing the four consecutive days in December 1994. This year will be different. The bureau says December 25 will be “partly cloudy. Slight (30 per cent) chance of a shower, most likely later in the day. Light winds becoming east to southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h during the day”.
