A $1.7 million community centre could soon be constructed in Haig Park, as the City Renewal Authority has lodged plans for the project aimed to help “reimagine” the area. The City Renewal Authority say the redevelopment on the Henty St site, Block 6 Section 8, is a key part of its plan to turn around the park’s bad reputation as a “black forest”. The authority proposes to demolish much of the existing structures including both sheds, part of the depot building and security fencing. An extension to the current depot building is planned and a new community centre would be built with a pergola connecting both structures. Initial plans for the project included office and workshop space and an outdoor play area. A “wet workshop” and multipurpose spaces including a kichenette and toilets were also part of the early design alongside a children’s play area and barbecue and picnic area. The authority also plans to build an outdoor plaza and new car access from Henty Street. The plans are a result of community feedback in 2019 which found a lack of community facilities in Haig Park. City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the facility would fill a gap for social and cultural groups looking for somewhere to hold events during the day. “We really wanted this to be a little gem that met all of the community’s aspirations,” he said. The plans are part of a broader plan to renew Haig Park, with new events including a farmer’s market part of bringing Canberrans back to the area. “[The park] had that really bad reputation, deservedly, as a bit of a black forest … but really now people are embracing it.” If the application is approved the authority expects construction to begin mid-year and be completed by 2022.
