Collingwood and Melbourne’s perfect starts to the AFLW season have continued after the Pies claimed a 29-point win over Geelong at a sold-out Victoria Park, while the Dees eased past Richmond by 28.
Key points:
- Brianna Davey starred as Collingwood beat Geelong at a sold-out Victoria Park
- Melbourne was far too good for Geelong after quarter-time, running away with a comfortable win
- Both the Cats and Tigers are waiting for their first wins of the year
The Magpies moved to a 2-0 record with a 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) win on Saturday, as Brianna Davey starred with 25 possessions and a goal.
The Cats started brightly but failed to kick a goal after quarter-time as they slipped to a 0-2 record that sees them bottom of the ladder.
Davey had plenty of willing helpers, with Brittany Bonnici (24 disposals), Ruby Schleicher (15 touches, one goal) and Sarah Rowe (15 touches, one goal) all prominent.
Geelong didn’t score in the first three quarters of their 62-point thumping by North Melbourne in round one, but were out of the blocks quickly against the Pies with a goal inside the first minute.
In her AFLW debut, Olivia Barber reacted quickest in a desperate goal-line scramble to toe-poke through with her first kick at the elite level.
Madeleine Boyd added Geelong’s second in an impressive opening term, but mental lapses proved costly.

The Magpies trailed by just two points at the first break after Schleicher goaled following a 50m penalty and Mikala Cann split the middle after back-to-back 50m penalties marched her from the wing to the goal line.
A superb Chloe Molloy snap gave the Pies their only goal for the second term as they edged out to a seven-point lead at half-time.
Both sides went goalless in the third, but Geelong were still in with a chance heading into the last quarter 10 points down.
However, Davey’s class shone through, the on-baller expertly gathering a loose ball and stroking home the opening goal of the term and then streaming from the centre square from the restart to set up Rowe’s brilliant major.
In the later game, the Demons utilised a multi-pronged forward set-up to run away to win 7.2 (44) to 2.4 (16) in perfect playing conditions at Casey Fields.

Richmond, still searching for that breakthrough win in their eighth attempt, lacked nothing for spirit and endeavour, but once again left too much to tall Sabrina Frederick and skipper Katie Brennan up forward.
Melbourne set up their second straight victory once the midfield, led by Karen Paxman (19 disposals) and Lily Mithen (20), took charge after an even opening quarter.
