Brisbane’s most popular dog: ‘If I had 200, I could sell them today’
Brisbane City Council rolled out the new range after a spike in dog ownership – registrations have gone up 10 per cent since 2019, and nearly 40 per cent of Brisbane households now have a four-legged family member.

The trendy tags are also an incentive to get more dog owners to register their fur babies to keep them safe and identifiable if they get lost, as only around 50 per cent of dogs are now registered with council.“We know more and more residents sought creature comfort during the pandemic and we’re encouraging responsible pet ownership with our new, stylish dog registration tags,” City Standards, Community Health and Safety Chair Kim Marx said.“We want to ensure all dogs in Brisbane are registered because it really is the most reliable and effective way to confirm a lost pet’s ownership and identification so we can quickly reunite them with their owner.”

While dog ownership is on the rise, it seems we are still drawn to the same names and breeds, with Bella and Charlie being the most popular dog name in 2020, and Labradors, Maltese and Border Collie’s the most popular breeds.Depending on the level of bling owners choose, the new tags will cost between $20 and $30 in addition to registration fees.Labrador owner Rebecca Harry said the new tags “look great” and are more functional than the old ones.“I love that they come in different colours and are personalised,” she said.“They are also much improved because you can change them between different collars – whereas the older tags could only be attached to one collar, and had to be reordered if you needed to replace or change the dog’s collar.”
