news, crime, Dale Goesch, Mercedes-Benz

A Canberra scaffolder who was at one point consuming $100 worth of meth a day will have a custodial sentence hanging over his head for the next 15 months. Dale Mitchell Goesch, 29, was arrested in August last year after he went on a burglary and robbery spree in the territory’s inner south. He entered a string of properties to come away with jewellery, electronics and money, and – most notably – yanked items from inside a man’s home while the man watched television. Goesch tried to back the man’s Mercedes-Benz out of his garage and, when the car owner confronted him and said, “What are you doing?”, Goesch punched him in the head. The 29-year-old ran off and the victim and his neighbour gave chase, but stopped when a gun fell out of the back of Goesch’s pants and an onlooker warned, “He’s got a gun”. In the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, prosecutor Sam Bargwanna said the “gun” was essentially a toy, but obviously still capable of instilling fear in Goesch’s victims. Goesch’s lawyer Bowan Shelton said his client had turned a corner since his arrest and remained abstinent from drugs. He said Goesch had spent 108 days in custody over the August spree, which had served as a big wake up call. “He also has a very big carrot dangling in front of him, being his children,” Mr Shelton said. He said Goesch had a very limited criminal history before a family member died and he struggled with grief. READ MORE: Magistrate Glenn Theakston accepted as much, and said Goesch had been deemed suitable for an intensive correction order – a jail sentence served in the community rather than behind bars. He ordered that Goesch abide by such an order until May 2022, and also pay the Mercedes-Benz owner more than $3700 in compensation for damage to his car and garage door. Goesch caused the damage when he backed into the garage door. The sentence accounted for eight charges including attempted robbery and two counts of burglary.
