Officers were forced to initially point tasers at the man while commanding he drop the syringe outside the Gatton St service station in Westcourt on Monday night.Cairns police Acting Insp Gary Hunter said after the man complied he was then “taken to the ground” by officers using “open hand tactics”.

“We were able to take the man into custody without incident,” he said.“We are currently working with this man in partnership with Queensland Health to ensure he obtains the best assistance possible.”Police have alleged the 38-year-old stole from the service station and was challenged by the manager.They alleged he initially behaved in an “erratic manner” and ignored police requests before they drew their tasers.Following his arrest he was charged with stealing, failing to take reasonable precautions with a syringe and obstructing police. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on November 24.
