A motorist who swerved and knocked a cyclist off his bike has been fined, according to Pedal Power, the ACT’s campaign group for cyclists. The collision was caught on the dash-cam of a vehicle following the swerving truck and trailer. The cyclist group said on its Facebook page: “ACT Policing confirmed today that action has finally been taken in relation to a terrible crash with a cyclist back on 3 October 2020. “The driver of the vehicle has been issued with an infringement for negligent driving. This infringement attracts a fine of $393 and three demerit points.” But Pedal Power thinks the fine should have been higher. “This fine seems grossly inadequate for negligent driving which seriously endangered a person’s life.” The group plans to lobby the ACT government “about the appropriateness of the penalties in our ROAD TRANSPORT ACT to deter such dangerous driving and effectively protect our community’s vulnerable road users.” Footage posted on the Dash Cam Owners Australia YouTube channel showed a trailer towed by a four-wheel drive hitting the cyclist, as they both turn off Coulter Drive towards William Hovell Drive. The cyclist was seen to come off his bike, and landing on the road. The video has a time stamp of 8.16am on the Saturday in October. It seems the driver of the vehicle and trailer missed the turn and swerved late into the path of the cyclist. The cyclist was treated by paramedics at the scene. His current condition is not known.
