whats-on, food-and-wine,
The coffee cart decorated as a jukebox which appeared in Fyshwick on Wednesday – and will be a fixture there from now on – is really the story of the love between a brother and his siblings. Mal Fellows had just started operating the cart in the Riverina area when he was diagnosed with liver cancer. The disease claimed him five months later, in Easter, 2019. Mal bequeathed the cart to his sister Tracey and she started running it with their brother Chris in Fyshwick on Wednesday, in the Maryborough Street carpark. “He was my baby brother,” Chris said. “And he was my big brother – he was Malcolm in the middle,” Tracey said, with a laugh. Chris and Tracey, who both previously worked in retail, had wanted to open the cart a year ago but then the coronavirus hit. They have received approval from the ACT government to operate the cart Monday to Friday, 6am to 2pm. It’s called Mal’s Espresso and as well as coffee will be offering roast pork rolls, old-fashioned sandwiches, and even homemade pumpkin soup in winter. It’s been a learning curve for the siblings but they wanted to continue the legacy of their gentle giant brother who stood over six feet tall and was “generous to a fault”. “It’s all in his name,” Tracey said. “Mal was an amazing person, such a beautiful soul.” He loved rock ‘n’ roll, and so wanted the cart to resemble a jukebox. He enjoyed country and western as well, but his favourite song was Robbie Williams’ Angels. Day one went off well for the pair. “We’ve had a really good reaction. People have been coming over and trying the coffee and saying it’s great coffee,” Chris said. “We’re very proud of it.” Our journalists work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
